My Friends (Part I)

Webster defines the word "friend" as:  a person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard.; a person who gives assistance; patron; supporter.

I am amazed at the wonderful people that surround my life.  There is one group of people , in particular, who I could not function without.  These women are a God-send to me! We met while pregnant or shortly after giving birth to our 2 year old toddlers and bonded over the aches and pains of pregnancy, the tears of colic, the sleepless nights and the heartache of our babies' growing up.

The bond we share rivals that of my family ... and we have never met!

Each of them has touched my life in one way or another and I want to share my friends with you!

Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow; Don't walk behind me, I may not lead; Walk beside me, and just be my friend.
Albert Camus

The journey of life will take you in so many directions and put you in contact with people you never imagined.

RaChelle ... Sweet, Sweet  RaChelle lives in Washington and is extremely gifted in the cake baking and cake decorating department!  Her son Chad is 2 weeks older than Nathan and has a slightly unhealthy addiction to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.  I often think that Nathan and Chad share similar DNA since they have so much in common.  Chelle has a very sweet heart and her house is filled with non-stop laughter whether it's from her, Chad or her husband, Ben.
RaChelle has a family blog if you would like to know more!
One of her amazing cakes!

Silly Chad!

Cindy ...  Miss Independent Cindy is married to an Air Force man and lives in Nevada.  Between taking care of her 2 energetic boys, maintaining her house and going to school, she is always on her toes!  Speaking of her sons, Alex is almost 6 and Carter is a week older than Nathan.  Carter is a little escape artist ... I think he was Houdini in a previous life.  Cindy has an incredibly strong woman and not afraid to be a leader in a house full of testosterone!
I love this pic of her boys b/c it really captures their energy and spirit!

Rebecca ... My neighbor Rebecca!  She's a fellow Texan and actually grew up just a few miles from my house!  She  now lives in Houston with her husband and 2 babies.  Ally is 4 days older than Nathan and James is 4 months old.  Rebecca and I try to get together whenever she's in town visiting her family.  I remember the first time we met up ... I felt like I was going on a blind date!
Rebecca has a blog too! Click here to learn more!
Our first blind date! (December '09)

This past Christmas (Dec. '10)

I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and this group of mom's was brought together for a purpose.  Maybe the purpose was for us to just bond and share our lives with each other, or maybe it's something greater that none of us expect.

Shaun refers to them as my "crack".  I prefer to call them my "therapy" in that I run to them when I've had a bad day.  I rely on them for advice, especially parenting advice since we are all usually dealing with the same issues.  They keep me sane!

You can call them what you want ... I call them my best friends and I thank God for them everyday!

What's in a name?

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

-Shakespeare
With the arrival of BGL coming up, it makes me wonder, what is in a name?

I searched my family’s names on www.name-meanings.com and found the meanings very enlightening  …

Shaun’s full name is Philip Shaun
Philip means “Lover of Horses”
Shaun means “God’s Gift”
Hmm … I’m not sure what I think about him being a “Horse Lover”!  And he already knows he’s God’s gift!

My full name is Rebecca Ann
Rebecca means “Servant of God”
Ann means “Gracious”
So, I am a gracious servant of God … I’ll take it!  And it makes more sense than a Horse Lover!

Nathan Christopher
Nathan means “Gift of God”
Christopher means “Christ-bearer”
So, this makes sense since his dad is “God’s Gift” too.

Armed with this information, I went on to search the meanings of BGL’s potential names

First name:
Katy (not Katherine or Katrina … just Katy) which means “Pure, Virginal”
Alyssa which means “Rational”
Both have a good, strong meaning.

Middle name:
Elizabeth which means “Consecrated to God”
Ann which means “Gracious”

Based on the above knowledge I now have, I’m leaning towards “Katy Beth” because I like the thought of her being “Pure, Virginal and Consecrated by God” as opposed to Alyssa Ann (“Rational and Gracious”).

To ponder Shakespeare's famous quote above, would my little girl be just as sweet if her name were, in fact, Dinosaur*?!

*Dinosaur is "God's Gift's Gift" suggestion (which the name Dino actually means "Little Sword" in case you didn't know!)

HATS!!

Honorable Mention #2: Dinosaurs
DINOS ...

They even like to read about themselves!

My 3 Favorite Things (by Nathan)

(Ma -that's right, he calls me Ma- translated for me)

I am your typical, happy, energetic 29 month old toddler until you remove one of the below three things from my life ... then I become "EVIL NATHAN"!!  I will make your life miserable until these 3 things are placed back where they should be ... in.my.hands!

1.  MONK-EEEEEEEEEE!!!!
I love my monkey.  He's my best friend.  He has slept with me from the day I came home from the hospital.  Sissy loves monkey too, but she sends him to the hospital.  A LOT!
Me and Monkey

2.  BINK-EEEEEEEEEE!!!!
I don't just love my binkie, I need, need, NEED my binkie!!  Ma keeps telling me about some "12 Step" nonsense to get off the bink and Daddy says that I will give it up when I start kindergarten and my classmates make fun of me.  Both of them are wrong ... my binkie and I have an unspoken bond that will last F-O-R-E-V-E-R!

January '10 (Me, Binkie, Monkey and Daddy)

December '10 (same Binkie!)
3.  BLANK-EEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!
I love my blankies!  I have at least 10 of them and love them all the same!  I think Ma and Daddy get me confused with some kid named Linus when I carry my blankie around with me.

Put them all together and you have 1 happy Nathan!

The Mountain ...

As I previously mentioned, I am passionate about marriage and relationships.  This passion was instilled very early on in my life by my parents who will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary this year.  Mama told me this story after my first heartbreak when I was 14 years old ...

Life is a mountain you start climbing from the day you are born.  When you are little, you are strapped to your parent's back and they do most of the climbing for you.  As you get older, you venture out a little on your own just to see if you can climb by yourself.  By the time you are a teenager, you think you are a professional climber and can handle the steepest cliffs. That's right around the time when you have your first fall.  It's a slight tumble, but feels like you hit rock bottom.   But you're not completely alone; you have the encouraging words of your family telling you to get up and keep climbing.  So you do.  You keep climbing.   You still have many slips and falls but with each fall, it gets easier and easier to dust yourself off and climb again.  Sometimes you have someone to climb with you and other times you are all alone.  It is the moments when you are all alone when you sometimes make the most progress.  One day, you stumble (sometimes literally) into a fellow climber who is trying to reach the same summit as you.  So you climb together.  Having this person by your side makes you feel invincible.  But you slip and just as you are about to fall, your partner reaches out their hand and catches you.  So the journey up the mountain continues but this time, you aren't alone.  You look to the person by your side and know they are there to share the burden of the steep climb with you.

The story gave me hope when I was 14 to realize that I wasn't alone on that first fall.  Little did my mama know the impact that story would have on my entire life.  Whenever I feel like I'm falling, I look to the person by my side and am not afraid because I know he will be there to catch me.  Likewise, when I see him falling, he knows that I will catch him as well.

A Brief Introduction ...

Shaun - the hubs/"daddy"
Tall, Dark and Handsome!  He's not a man of a many words, but the words that he does say are meaningful and often hilarious!  He is my hero.  He is my knight in shining armor.  He is passive and patient 95% of the time but has been known to turn into Dr. Jekyl when playing video games or during frustrating home improvement projects!  He used to fish every Sunday morning for hours on his bass boat - he now spends his Sundays grocery shopping and watching Blues Clues with Nathan.  His son is his best friend.
May 2010 ... Me and my "bunny" in Mexico!
July 2010 ... The Loves of My Life!

May 2010 ... Always there to protect!

Sissy - the dog
Poor, poor Sissy.  She is a big, sweet, dumb mutt that doesn't have a mean bone in her body.  She was the first child of the family and quickly became the red-headed step child when Nathan was born.  Poor Sissy.  Her namesake is actually Ci-Ci (yes, after the pizza buffet) but that name quickly became "Sissy" when we realized how big of a wuss she was!  We need to keep a watchful eye on her since she still LOVES to eat socks and steal Nathan's toys.  Play-doh and Mega Blocks are a delicacy to her.  She's 6 years old and I often wonder when she will grow out of her puppy ways.
Two Peas in a Pod

Sissy as a Puppy (We stopped taking pictures of Sissy after Nathan was born)

Nathan - the boy
Silly Nathan.  Nathan is a bundle of love and energy and goes 100 miles per hour from the time he wakes up until he falls asleep at night.  He is a daredevil and Shaun is his personal roller coaster.  He is by far my life's best creation!  Is he potty trained? No.  Does he still take a binkie? Yes.  Does he know his life is about to dramatically change in a few months?  No.  He's completely clueless even though we talk about the baby everyday!
Don't let the "innocent" face fool you...

He's a stinker with a capital "S"!

As you can tell ...

Nathan in his prime!

BGL - the girl
Not much to say about her since she's still in process.  From what I can tell, she is going to take after her big brother with her boundless energy!

(Images coming soon!)

Me - the wife/"ma"
I'm me.  I have a "full-time" paying job outside of the home and really enjoy what I do.  But my main focus - my priority - is keeping the above mentioned people happy and fulfilled in life!
Me!  And my yummy sandwich!

A Brief History
Shaun and I met on Saturday, April 15th, 2000 at Fry Street Fair in Denton, TX.  Shaun was a college friend of my brother Andy . I remember the day like it was yesterday down to what I was wearing and the horrible sunburn I got.  Andy had a firm "no dating my sister" rule with his friends, but something in his gut told him it was okay when Shaun asked him for my number.  We had our first official date 2 weeks later.  In my mind, the date was a free meal and a chance to scratch 2 "types" off my list (college graduate and a Marine).  Little did I know that it was the start of the life I have now.

He popped the question May 1st, 2003, we were married October 9th, 2004 and Nathan was born August 26th, 2008.
